Mindfulness through Smell and Scent

Scent is a powerful sense which can evoke memories as well as calm the mind. Scientists think  that certain scents send chemical messages to parts of your brain that boost mood and emotion.

Aromatherapy uses concentrated oils (so the smell is more intense) to do exactly this – you can breathe them in gently or rub on your skin in a carrier oil. A few drops are also nice in a bath or on your pillow to help you sleep.

Aromatherapy oils are easy to find in health shops and chemists if you would like to try them. However there are other  products such as scented wax, candles and lavender bags that are just as calming.

Whatever you choose to use the trick is to wait and take your time to notice the details in the smell. Is is floral or woody? Citrus or musk? Fruit or a Spicy scent?
